Did you know that one in three law students and legal professionals in Australia will suffer some form of psychological distress in their lifetime?
The Deakin Law Students’ Society Geelong is pleased to be participating in the Australian Law Students’ Association (ALSA)‘s Wellbeing Week for 2015. ALSA wishes to challenge the stigma attached to mental ill-health in the law, promote a broader and honest conversation on this topic and encourage law students and lawyers to be proactive about their mental health and wellbeing. You can visit the ALSA event page for running updates on their initiatives and resources throughout this week, and follow our social media feeds for further informative posts.

Hey everyone! We know that you’re super keen to confirm where you are seated for this year’s Law Ball: New York State of Mind. Please find below a PDF file of the table listings as well as the overall floor plan. The Functions Team has done its absolute best to accommodate as many requests as possible, and we thank everyone who has been in touch with us to confirm dietary requirements and attendee names. The legal profession has one of the highest rates of anxiety, depression and other mental health problems, and the signs can often start in law school. According to SurviveLaw, law students are almost three times more likely than other students to experience depression at some point in their university lives.
If your gut says something’s not quite right with someone, chances are that they might need a bit of extra support from the people around them. Today (10th September) DLSS Geelong encourages Deakin University‘s law students to ask each other – #RUOK? After all, healing and help can begin with just one conversation. You can find mental health resources and more information about R U OK Day by visiting their website, especially the link
You can also find out more about Deakin University’s confidential counselling services by clicking here.
In an informative workshop hosted by the DLSS Geelong, Young Lawyers of the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) will attend Deakin University’s Waterfront Campus to deliver crucial information to students about the legal profession. The event is aimed at first and second year students, however all law students are welcome to attend, whether studying on-campus or via Cloud learning.

Need some #travelinspo in the midst of exam cram?
If any of these apply to you come to the Deakin Abroad Returned Students’ Session!
As Deakin law students, we are a pretty lucky bunch in that there’s over a hundred universities around the world that we can spend a semester or two studying abroad at.
This is your chance to speak with returned students about their experiences studying overseas and find out how you can organise your own trip of a lifetime (and get law credits for it!) The session will feature returned Deakin law students who can give you all the info you need on how to make your law degree work with a semester overseas.
Deakin Waterfront, Tuesday June 2 – 1:00pm in D3.211. Any questions about this event can be sent to Declan Higgins at firstname.lastname@example.org, or click here to visit the event on Facebook.
